last night my brother was playing with his cousin in his room, which is directly above the living room mom and i were sitting in. i couldn't tell if the sound i heard from up there was william's voice or a deep voice on the radio. i mentioned it to mom and she replied with "yeah, things sure change fast."
it was a simple statement, but it really got me thinking. it seems like a really short 13 years ago that we picked up an exhausted 13-month-old boy from the airport in omaha. i had always wanted a brother and when mom convinced dad to adopt a boy, i was extatic. with a nervous 2-hr drive to the airport, we anticipated adding a member to our family. we had already made a trip to the airport in lincoln the night before and on this thursday night, we again weren't sure if he would be on the plane. a dozen or two business people got off the flight we hoped he would be on. about five minutes later, a woman carrying a little korean boy came off the plane. (she had been changing his diaper) it was obvious he didn't want to be held, so she let him crawl around the tile at the airport while my parents visited with her and the social worker assigned to us. my sister and i watched him, trying to convince ourselves that this was our brother.
in a few months he will enter high school. i wish i knew where the time went...
